Education Home to many fine educational institutions,
San Antonio offers degree plans from two-year community colleges
to graduate programs to world-class medical training. We have
also provided links to the local school systems, elementary and
secondary school sites, as well as public and private training
programs. San Antonio's many public school districts are each
independently administered and accredited by the Texas Education
Agency in Austin. Every school district has an elected board and
an appointed superintendent. Funding is by state and federal funds,
and by local property taxes levied by each school district. A
child will go to school in the district where his or her family
lives. A child must be six years old on or before September 1st
of the year he enters first grade. There is no busing of students
across district boundaries. However, Business Career High School
(210-706-7070), Health Career High School (210-617-5400), the
International School of the Americas (210-442-0404), and the Sidney
Lanier Magnet School of International Banking & Business (210-223-2926)
accept out-of-district students. The school districts have a total
of 35 high schools, 2 high/junior high schools, 55 middle schools,
5 junior highs, and 209 elementary schools. In addition, there
are: 1 childhood center, 10 special schools, 2 alternative centers,
4 academies, 1 career education center, 1 competency high school,
and 4 magnet schools. Total average daily attendance for all districts
is 236,626 students. The San Antonio Independent School District
is the largest in the city with an average daily attendance of
52,000 students on 94 campuses. The Texas Educational Assessment
of Minimum Skills Test is given to all 3rd, 5th and 9th graders
across the state. It indicates the level of mastery of basic skills
like reading, language arts and math. Call the school district
in the area where you reside for dates of registration. Take your
child's birth certificate, proof of residence and immunization
records with you on registration day. Colleges and Universities
